We cannot quite believe we are in our twentieth year. The Harwich International Shanty Festival has been a significant player in the rejuvenation of interest in the rich history of maritime music. And as enthusiasm for shanties has grown, and captured the imagination of musicians across the globe, so too has the festival. However, there is something very special about our festival. It is resolutely homegrown and authentic. You will find songs on street corners, late sessions in pubs, family-friendly singalongs, as well as a whole host of ticketed performances.
The Harwich International Festival has grown from a tiny idea to an internationally renowned, but fiercely local and authentic, festival. We have riden the tides of Covid and survived and it continues to be an incredibly popular event. In fact, we are really at risk of out-growing the town which is why we work really hard to keep things organised, and why it is important that people are respectful of our local residents. Our streets are narrow and parking is limited.
Some highlights from last year's festival.
We are working on putting together an archive of images from the previous two decades of the festival. Coming soon....
